miso soup

Does anybody know what exactly is in miso soup? I went to a Japanese restaurant yesterday and I always get miso soup, which I've always assumed to be vegetarian. (I'm usually very, very careful about things I don't know about. I religiously read ingredient labels.) But it occurs to me that it's possible that it's not vegetarian.

Miso soup is often, if not usually flavoured with fish stock, but it can be made without it, so...

Hate to tell you this, but the vast majority of the time miso soup is made with dashi which contains bonito (aka fish stock). It's pretty much only vegetarian if you get it at a vegetarian restaurant (or a very inauthentic restaurant).

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh damnit.
i've been eating miso soup and it's probably not vegetarian where i get it. i thought it was soy bean broth or something. :'(

You know, you can make your own miso soup online...just look for a vegetarian miso soup recipie and then go to your local international or asian food store.

Yes, I'm sure I could. But it's not quite the same as when you're at a Japanese restaurant eating some of those yummy veggie rolls and want a little miso soup to go with it.

Mmm, miso soup with soy sauce in it. But I had no idea about this fish stocking thing. Though I guess I cheat my vegetarianess with some sea creatures in sushi, but now I'm interested in that vegetarian recipie.
